Lofts and basements of houses in the central part of St.Petersburg give shelter to numerous colonies of homeless children. As a rule there are from 5 to 10 children in a colony. They are from 10 to 17 years old. The youngest children manage to get money more successfully then the eldest because people give them alms more often. The eldest children defend the youngest and arrange everyday life. The children roam from loft to loft in the warm seasons. They seldom stay in the same loft for month or more because householders discover the children and drive them away with the militia. Because of that, the homeless children begin to search for a new refuge as soon as they have settled down in a loft. The children move to basements in the cold seasons.
